This novel had everything I love in a romance; hero and heroine fighting their growing attraction to one another, eventual sizzling love scenes, along with plenty of drama and action. There were scenes that brought tears to my eyes, others that made me laugh, tense moments, and plenty of tenderness and sexiness. The plot was fast-paced, with plenty of obstacles for the main characters to overcome before they could be together. Lucas and Annie had great chemistry, and were well characterized, as were the rest of the characters. I liked the fact that Annie was written as a strong, yet vulnerable heroine in need of help, and protection. One of my pet peeves when reading historical fiction is a heroine who acts and behaves too much like a twenty-first century woman! I loved the descriptions of the town of Eminence and the sense of belonging and family the town and its people represented for both Lucas and Annie. The attention to historical detail, and the time period was both interesting and accurate.Buy this book. You won’t be disappointed. I can’t wait for book 2 in the series.

I love western romance and I love small towns, I guess 'cause I grew up in the west on a ranch in a small town. I 've read a lot of western romance stories too, but this one has beat them all. I give this story a Triple A, Blue Ribbon, Best Western award. Shelly Thacker has really described the early western lifestyle to a "T," complete with country folk scrabbling to make a living, the laws being enforced by U.S. Marshalls, local sheriffs and deputies, and the joys of folk in the simple things honor, family, food and love. There is even a mystery in this story about Lucas, a Marshall, and Annie, an accused murderer, who meet in a small mountain town in Colorado. This is a wonderful story of past regrets, misplaced duty, rising above the pettiness and meanness of gossip, fighting fear, striving for forgiveness, gaining acceptance and the redemption of love. I will carry this story in my heart for some time to come.
Annie, the beautiful young daughter of a prostitute, becomes the mistress of the high society gentleman James McKenna. She becomes pregnant in spite of all her caution and goes to James' house for help. James dismisses her and the miserable girl tries to end her life. In the ensuing tussle, the firearm goes off accidentally and James dies. Annie flees with a bundle of cash to a far off place and tries to start life anew. But she loses her child and is heartbroken.
Lucas McKenna, the Us marshal and the brother of James is fired up with vengeance and promises to bring her to justice. He finds her but is unable to take her back immediately. His attitude towards Annie slowly changes. He cannot write her off as a liar and cheat and murderer as he did before. His growing love for Annie, which he desperately tries to deny, is beautifully portrayed. Annie's coming out of her painful past and growing stronger is wonderful. Thankfully, the couple get their HEA. This is a story you would like to read more than once.Definitely a good buy.
Shelly Thacker is one of my favorite authors, and she did not disappoint with "After Sundown". I loved this book. In fact, it was responsible for my staying up until 230 am this morning.
The characters of Annie Sutton and Marshall Lucas McKenna were likable and believable. It was such a relief to read about a heroine who was kind, soft-hearted and self-sacrificing. I am sick of the current trend of heroines who are self-absorbed and bitchy in the name of being strong, independent women. The strongest women are those who are able to put others first and still stay true to themselves.
Ms. Thacker's writing style is always wonderful, combining just the right amount detail to make the reader feel he/she is there, without tiring them with an over-abundance of details.
There were a couple of love scenes, but they were not the focus. The focus was a story that involved the human spirit, the goodness of people, and the triumph of love, with a little mystery thrown in.. The story revolves around a situation I haven't read as a central theme before, which was also refreshing.
I would definitely recommend this book for anyone who enjoys a good love story..
I absolutely loved this book! It's the best i have read in a very long time! Where has "Shelly Thacker" been" I have read 4 of her books and want more! This is a Western, about Lucas and Annie! He is a Marshal sent to hunt down Annie who everyone is sure the she killed Lucas's brother. Annie was his brothers Mistress! When she told him that she was pregnant, he laughed and threw her a few dollars and said"Get rid of it! as he already had a wife and 3 children! There was a gun laying on his desk, Annie grabbed it and shot! She ran!!!! Lucas followed her tracks every where! Different Cities, and towns! Annie had found a home and everyone loved her, but she was always looking over her shoulder! I haven't read a good Western since i was a very young woman! and i loved it. I can't express my feeling about "Sundown" all i can say is take "old lady's word for it! You will love this book, you have too! " After Sundown" I will read this over & over again! Send me more Books by Shelly Thacker,especially her earlier ones.

I have several thousand books on my app so that it’s difficult to choose what to read. So, I am picking a slip of paper to determine which author to read alphabetically. I picked the T’s and am trying to choose authors I’ve haven’t read yet. This pick was an awesome choice and I’ve found another favorite author.
