The Simple Guide to Aquaponic Gardening From Tiny Indoor Space to Lush Organic Garden edition by Augusta Sinclair Crafts Hobbies Home eBooks

Wow, this book just rocked my world. I found out about aquaponics from a friend after I had several epic fails trying to grow kale in the backyard. The bugs kept eating my dreams! The idea sounded very good, but I had trouble getting information on getting started that I could actually do for myself. Information on youtube and other sources didn't seem to offer a process I could do in my own small space, and I guess those guys were a little overwhelming. It's a good short length, but I sat down and read this book very closely, like over week or so, and I actually feel like I can grow food in my house now. Sinclair gives very clear and step by step instructions on how to set up a system in the house, which materials to use to build a small tank, which grow media to use, how to pick fish, and how to keep the tank healthy. There was so much detailed information that filled in the blanks, especially on setup of the tanks and plant area, that I just didn't see on the blogs and youtube. This was major for me because now I see that I can actually afford it, I can do it myself, and I don't have to have a lot of land or a backyard in Florida or be out homesteading somewhere to make it work. There were a few parts of the book layout that felt bunched together, and because I am a grammar nut, a few things stood out that I hope she gets around to fixing. But it wasn't distracting, I only paid $3, and I still like the author's basic approach and "get to the point" style. You can tell that she really cares about families who are trying to find healthy, less expensive options, and her approach is really empowering, even for a beginner. She even talks about her mistakes and how to avoid killing your fish and how to use cheaper buckets and other items. Just a very generous book. The book has a resource link and page, which is very helpful, but I also really appreciated that the book never felt like a commercial or sales pitch. Great info. I'm excited! I took a lot of notes and I plan to start this weekend.

The Simple Guide to Aquaponic Gardening From Tiny Indoor Space to Lush Organic Garden edition by Augusta Sinclair Crafts Hobbies Home eBooks Reviews

Very good information on aquaponic gardening. The author starts with the basic introduction about why aquaponic gardening is really important in order to eat food that will help us to stay healthy. Then remaining chapters contains lots of useful information about how to build your own aquaponic gardening discussing on every major part of building the system. Many topics are explained in detail to understand the importance of them. There are so many useful tips that you can follow to build your own aquaponic gardening system. The flow of the book is quite good which helps readers to get step by step knowledge of aquaponic gardening.
If you are thinking about building your own aquaponic gardening system or already started then this book is highly recommended.
The author claims that pvc plumbing should be avoided because it leaks toxins into the water and to use copper?! As a fish biologist with a masters in aquaculture and years of experience in the industry, pvc pipe is what everyone uses and is perfectly safe for the fish. And I had a fellow classmate that lost her entire tank of fish because her water came into contact with the smallest piece of copper. Also, the author's suggestions for fish densities and feeding and time to harvest are all based on tilapia. As far as being very much against soy based fish feed, I'm not sure where that's coming from. One of the VERY FEW negatives of aquaculture is its reliance on Peruvian anchovies to make its fish pellets. I know of scientists working hard to try plant protein (aka soy) as a replacement for anchovies, so that aquaculture feed production can be more sustainable. Of course, I'm talking about carnivorous fish that aren't used to eating plants. I'm also unclear as to why he believes GMO-sexed fish are better than horizontally-sexed fish. I do not see a problem with either and would recommend farmers choose based on availability and cost. Overall, I'm not sure I could recommend this book, hence the poor rating.
Simple, no-nonsense easy to understand book for those looking to get into Aquaponics. Many books give you overly simple or overly complex instruction. The author strikes a good balance between the two types.
